Volcanoes of Costa Rica

Costa Rica has many natural and beautiful rocky formations that look the same way as just any other mountain, but some of these mountains have boiling temperatures and hot streams inside them.

There are 580 active volcanoes in the world. Of these, 500 are in the Pacific Rim called the Ring of Fire. There are 68 Volcanoes is Costa Rica, most inactive; they form most of the mountain ranges you see around you.

There are over 112 volcanic formations across Costa Rica.  Seven of these are currently active, presenting lava flows, incandescent rocks, fumaroles, and ash columns.

Costa Rica is formed by four main distinct mountain ranges (cordilleras), each displaying unique features. Moving from Nicaragua to Panama, they are: Guanacaste, Tilaran, Central and Talamanca.

Only ten of Costa Rica’s Volcanoes are listed as “tourist destinations” so there is a lot to discover for the adventurous tourist.

Among the volcanoes of Costa Rica you will find the Arenal which is an active one and you could see at night shoots off natural fireworks. Also the Irazu Volcano offers breathtaking views and the inactive Poas has the largest crater.
